Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to operate electric lift trucks is provided by large industrial batteries which need to be charged regularly and maintained properly. Safety procedures must always be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is vital to check battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is vital for anyone working with a forklift battery. Full protection comprises goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect clothing and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station should be situated close to the charging area. The route to the post must not be blocked and an injured worker must be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While near a battery and charging area, open fire are prohibited. Never allow objects like matches or lighters to be used while somebody is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging place well ventilated. The recharging method could cause fumes to be released. These gases are both poisonous and explosive.
